Toyama Glass Art Museum

Toyama’s glass industry stems from the medicine container manufacturing which started in the early Meiji Period. Before the WW2, there were as many as 10 glass factories with melting furnaces around Toyama Station. The museum was established by Toyama city in 2015 and is regarded as the culmination of Toyama’s “Glass Town Development” scheme. The exterior walls are made of three different materials – glass, aluminum, and granite – and express the changing appearance of the Tateyama mountain range with the seasons.

Interior of Toyama Glass Art Museum

The interior of Toyama Glass Art Museum has a tilted space and transparent ceiling facing south. This structure makes the sunlight reach throughout the atrium and get deeply enough to the ground floor of the building. This struture makes the whole atrium glitter gorgeously. In addition, the wooden wall boards are made from the cedar tree and shelves are made from the washi paper or glass, all of which are the products from Toyama Prefecture.

When Toyama City was elected as one of the 52 places to go in 2025 in New York Times, the museum was compared to "the Cathedral of Light".

Works of Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is one of the famous glass artists in the United States. 5 pieces of his works are displayed at the 6th floor of the museum. "Toyama Float Boat" is his iconic work created from Chihuly's inspiration he got when he visited Toyama, representing a combination of the small boat used in Jinzu river and glass fishing ball commonly seen in Toyama Bay.

Solar panels at the back

The solar panels are installed on the wall at the back of the building, which is slightly tilted. The wall is intentionally tilted to avoid the feeling that a vertical wall would be intimidating to the neighboring residents.
